Get to know the creative mind behind the markers! ✨ In this month’s spotlight, we’re chatting with one of our talented Inky Thinking collaborators about what inspires them, how they unwind outside of illustrating, and the projects that spark their passion. Here’s a glimpse into Tom Russell's (founder) experiences, motivations and values;

How do you like to relax/switch off when not illustrating?

We moved house last year and transitioned from a house with a Victorian yard to a 300 foot garden. Now there’s always something that needs digging, weeding or mowing! Enjoying art and design is another personal passion, inherited from my graphic designer (now retired) parents. We live in stunning Northumberland, and there’s no better place to get out and about and enjoy the great outdoors.

What motivates you as an illustrator?

I can be found graphic recording at conferences and events. Capturing the key messages from an event in real time is always an enjoyable challenge as every meeting is different, especially the content being shared. It’s always a delight to see participants watching the graphic emerge, taking photos, and making sense of the information on the chart.

What do you enjoy most about working for Inky Thinking?

The Inky Thinking team and our range of clients are what rocks in this business. We have the pleasure of collaborating with an enormous range of clients on diverse topics which means the work is never dull. I love the team and the diverse perspectives and creative skill they bring. When I started this business, I felt it was important to showcase different illustration styles, and that principle has stayed with us to give our clients both choice and quality.

What’s been your favourite Inky Thinking client project?

I am working on a complex project with a global automotive client on the subject of culture change. The project includes both facilitation and graphics, and has presented an ideal opportunity to demonstrate how the two offerings align for impactful results. The client team, including the Board, are a pleasure to collaborate with and don’t hold back when it comes to keeping us on our toes!

What can Inky Thinking clients expect when collaborating?

A clear focus on outcomes combined with an openness to try different ideas and a distinctly visual approach. Delivering value is a core personal driver, and I want all our clients to achieve the biggest impact from all the bespoke assets we create.
